A recent online survey of drivers from across the country, conducted by State Farm Insurance and KRC Research, revealed that aggressive driving is at an all time high during the holiday season. Aggressive driving occurs when a driver intentionally operates their vehicle in a way that increases the chances of an automobile accident.

64 percent of drivers reported experiencing aggressive driving on six or more occasions over the past three months.

The survey polled 1,000 U.S. drivers, 18 years or older who held a valid driver’s license. The 64 percent of drivers reported experiencing aggressive driving on six or more occasions over the past three months. In addition, 44 percent of respondents admitted to driving more aggressively during these months.

Young and middle aged drivers as well as, parents are most likely to drive aggressively.

The groups of drivers most likely to engage in aggressive driving were young drivers (between the ages of 18 and 29), middle aged drivers (between the ages of 30 and 49) and parents. They are 32, 28, and 30 percent more likely to engage in aggressive driving respectively. Conversely, older drivers (ages 50 and older) and non-parents are the least likely to engage in aggressive driving. Nine and 15 percent of respondents in these categories report that they are likely to engage in aggressive driving respectively.

Over half of respondents believe that men are more likely to drive aggressively.

54 percent of respondents also admitted that they believe male drivers are more likely to be aggressive behind the wheel as compared to female drivers. 37 percent of respondents believe male and female drivers are equally as likely to engage in aggressive driving. 10 percent believed that females are more aggressive drivers than men.

Traffic jams, running late, and roadway construction are the scenarios most likely to lead to aggressive driving.

The survey also revealed that the circumstances most likely to provoke aggressive driving were traffic jams, running late, and road closures or construction. 63, 55, and 47 percent of respondents stated they would respond aggressively to these situations respectively.
